{"id":36,"date":"2020-09-30T20:42:10","date_gmt":"2020-09-30T20:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sustainabilityreport.ucop.edu\/?page_id=36"},"modified":"2023-07-03T19:19:45","modified_gmt":"2023-07-03T19:19:45","slug":"academics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sustainabilityreport.ucop.edu\/2020\/academics\/","title":{"rendered":"Academics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content-section\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"research\">Research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of California\u2019s research enterprise examines many sustainability challenges, including several related to climate change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Highlights from 2020 include:<\/h3>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">Accelerating the most promising climate solutions<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/californiaclimatesolutions.org\/about\/\">California Collaborative for Climate Change Solutions (C4S)<\/a>, currently led by UC principal investigators, has established a consortium of multidisciplinary researchers from California\u2019s private and public academic institutions, with the aim of accelerating the most promising climate solutions on the state, national and global levels. Funded projects associated with C4S total $12.4 million to date.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">CalTestbed Initiative<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Since 2019, the UC system has partnered with New Energy Nexus on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltestbed.com\/\">CalTestBed Initiative<\/a>, an $11 million California Energy Commission-funded award to host clean energy entrepreneurs at UC energy testbed facilities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">Collaborative research<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Collaborative research across the University aims to address the state\u2019s environmental and climate needs. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/research-initiatives\/programs\/lab-fees\/index.html\"> UC National Laboratory Fees Research Program<\/a> prioritized wildfire-related research, investing $10.6 million in prevention and mitigation in projects like the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.ucsb.edu\/2020\/019743\/wildfires-warming-world\">Wildfires in a warming world<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/news.ucmerced.edu\/news\/2020\/wildfire-and-water-challenge-solutions-featured-documentary-air-kvie\">California\u2019s wildfire and water challenges<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/theaggie.org\/2020\/01\/31\/uc-davis-researchers-receive-grant-for-wildfire-mitigation-particle-accelerator-study\/\">Fire-resistant building materials for wildfire mitigation<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">UC Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/research-initiatives\/programs\/mrpi\/index.html\">UC Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives<\/a> funded research into the significant health effects of climate change and wildfire. One study found that the health effects of <a href=\"https:\/\/health.ucsd.edu\/news\/releases\/Pages\/2020-02-25-heatwave-exposure-linked-to-increased-risk-of-preterm-birth-in-california.aspx\">heatwaves increase women\u2019s risk of preterm labor<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">California Carbon Neutrality Plan<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The 2019 State of California Budget Act appropriated $3 million to <a href=\"https:\/\/calepa.ca.gov\/climate\/carbon-neutrality-studies\/\">the California Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> for two studies to inform ongoing state regulatory and policy processes to guide California\u2019s path to carbon neutrality by 2045. The studies, conducted by the University of California, identify strategies to significantly reduce transportation-related fossil fuel demand and emissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">UC Natural Reserve System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020, the UC Natural Reserve System <a href=\"https:\/\/ucnrs.org\/nrs-reserves-adapt-to-coronavirus-shutdown\/\">continued to support research<\/a>, including biodiversity research, and education despite pandemic shutdowns. Many of these initiatives were funded by UC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/initiative\/carbon-neutrality-initiative\">Carbon Neutrality Initiative<\/a>, which commits the University to carbon neutrality by 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">New UC Online Course Aims to Bring Climate Change Solutions to Global Audience<\/h4>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bendingthecurve.ucsd.edu\/\">Bending the Curve: Climate Change Solutions<\/a> is an online course that is now available to anyone in the public \u2014 from high school students to retired professionals \u2014 who are interested in solutions to the climate change crisis. The four-part series includes recorded lectures from 25 experts in climate science, social science, public health, policy, economics, energy technologies, super-pollutants and ecosystem management from across the UC system and elsewhere. This series builds on a course developed by UC San Diego\u2019s Scripps Institution of Oceanography climate scientist Veerabhadran Ramanathan and faculty collaborators across the UC system and has been taught by five or more UC campuses each year since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-default\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link external wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/feature\/new-course-aims-to-bring-climate-change-solutions-to-global-audience?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=instagram&amp;utm_campaign=olucsd-btc-launch\" rel=\"https:\/\/ucsdnews.ucsd.edu\/feature\/new-course-aims-to-bring-climate-change-solutions-to-global-audience?utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=instagram&amp;utm_campaign=olucsd-btc-launch\">View online course<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">Transformative Education for Climate Action: The NXTerra platform<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>A University of California <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/initiative\/carbon-neutrality-initiative\">Carbon Neutrality Initiative<\/a>-funded network, with faculty from both UC and the California State University (CSU) system, launched a digital platform in November 2019 called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nxterra.orfaleacenter.ucsb.edu\/\">UC-CSU NXTerra<\/a> for climate educators. NXTerra produces, curates and delivers education resources on climate change, critical sustainability and climate justice to teachers of every discipline \u2014 from the arts and humanities to the human and social sciences and the natural sciences \u2014 with a vision of sharing resources to accelerate climate education and action in California and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-default\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link external wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nxterra.orfaleacenter.ucsb.edu\/\">Learn about NXTerra<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">K-12 Environmental and Climate Change Literacy Project and Summit<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The University of California and California State University systems are partnering to dramatically expand opportunities for students to learn about climate change and take part in effective solutions. The initiative aims to help more than 500,000 high school students each year to become literate in environmental and climate change issues and solutions. In 2019, more than 200 higher education leaders, prekindergarten through 10th-grade educators, researchers, policymakers and others gathered at UCLA to take part in the <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/tenstrands.org\/ecclps\/home\">Environmental and Climate Change Literacy Project and Summit (ECCLPS)<\/a>. The UC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/initiative\/carbon-neutrality-initiative\">Carbon Neutrality Initiative<\/a>-funded meeting was held during the United Nations\u2019 Climate Change Summit in Madrid, with the theme of \u201cToday California, Tomorrow the World.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-default\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link external wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/ampersand.gseis.ucla.edu\/environmental-and-climate-change-literacy-project-and-summit-at-ucla-aims-to-advance-teaching-and-learning-about-the-climate-crisis-and-its-solutions-in-california\/\">Explore the initiative<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">New Open Access Book Casts Climate Change as a Public Health Crisis&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Two UC San Diego scientists \u2014 Veerabhadran Ramanathan of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and Wael Al-Delaimy of the School of Medicine \u2014 published an open-access book on climate and public health with Monsignor Marcelo S\u00e1nchez Sorondo of the Vatican\u2019s Pontifical Academy of Sciences and with contributions from Stephen Hawking, former California Gov. Jerry Brown, four Nobel Laureates and others. <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/book\/10.1007\/978-3-030-31125-4\">Health of People, Health of Planet and Our Responsibility<\/a> is a unique publication given the wide range of its contributors\u2019 backgrounds. A selection of students&#8217; systemwide work and awards in environmental sustainability is featured throughout this year\u2019s report.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">Carbon Neutrality Initiative Student Fellowships<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The UC President\u2019s Bonnie Reiss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucop.edu\/leading-on-climate\/student-involvement\/index.html\">Carbon Neutrality Initiative (CNI) Student Fellowship Program<\/a> funds student-generated projects that support the UC system\u2019s goal to produce zero-net greenhouse gas emissions by 2025. Thirty-five students received fellowships in 2020, for research into various topic areas, including the carbon sequestration potential of compost, anaerobic digestion, carbon offsets and the replacement of outdated incubators with energy-efficient ones. Other fellows organized events and communications to increase the engagement of students on their campuses in UC\u2019s carbon neutrality efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">Students Lead Development of UC Policy to Phase Out Single-Use Plastics<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>Students across the system inspired a new University policy committing to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universityofcalifornia.edu\/press-room\/uc-moves-scrap-single-use-plastics\">phasing out the use of single-use plastics<\/a>. The student organization CALPIRG\u2019s Plastic-Free Seas Campaign collected more than 12,000 student signatures and sponsored resolutions with the UC Student Association and local student governments to support phasing out nonessential, single-use plastic on all UC campuses. Students worked with campus leaders to go beyond this minimum systemwide policy at UC Berkeley, which committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainability.berkeley.edu\/news\/university-california-berkeley-leads-way-country%E2%80%99s-strongest-single-use-plastic-ban\">eliminating all nonessential single-use plastics by 2030<\/a>, and at UCLA, which adopted an <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ucla.edu\/releases\/ucla-policy-single-use-plastics\">accelerated timeline for the phaseout<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">Conservation Scholars Program Improves Diversity&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The Doris Duke Charitable Foundation awarded renewed funding for the <a href=\"https:\/\/conservationscholars.ucsc.edu\/\">Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program at UC Santa Cruz<\/a> with a grant of $2.63 million over the next four years. The program was established with an initial four-year grant in 2015 with the goal of diversifying the conservation field. Each year, the program recruits 20 early-career college students to participate in two years of experiential training in field research and conservation leadership. The scholars represent a diverse spectrum of cultures and backgrounds, which helps to cultivate an inclusive and rewarding experience, according to the program\u2019s faculty director Erika Zavaleta, a professor of ecology and evolutionary biology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-default\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link external wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/conservationscholars.ucsc.edu\/\">The Conservation Scholars Program<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">EPA Awards Grants to UC Berkeley and Riverside Student Teams for Innovative Technology Projects<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Student Design Competition grants to student teams from UC Berkeley and UC Riverside. The two UC campuses were among only 18 nationally selected by the EPA to receive a P3 grant. Each student team received a Phase I grant of up to $25,000 to develop their sustainable designs that will help solve important environmental and public health challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button is-style-default\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link external wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/epa-awards-grants-uc-berkeley-and-riverside-student-teams-innovative-technology\">Innovative Technology Projects<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group content-section has-light-gray-background-color has-background\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"academic-senate\">Academic Senate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/senate.universityofcalifornia.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The University of California\u2019s Academic Senate<\/a> carries out shared governance responsibilities established by the Regents and relating to academic matters.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/sustainabilityreport.ucop.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/IMG_9536-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Students in chairs watching a presentation at the Sustainability Summit\" class=\"wp-image-972\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">Academic Council Principles and Recommendations for Addressing the Climate Change Challenge<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>At its November 2019 meeting, the Academic Council, the administrative arm of the Assembly of the Academic Senate, endorsed three recommendations to guide the University\u2019s response to the climate change challenge:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Formally support UC\u2019s lead in demonstrating carbon neutrality with the intent of decarbonization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formally support coordination and faculty engagement in developing alternative approaches to address the challenge of climate change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Foster the mobilization of multi-, cross-, and trans-disciplinary teams to communicate and explain the urgency of sustainability and decarbonization.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>These principles ultimately call on the Academic Senate to mobilize faculty support for the University\u2019s carbon neutrality and de-carbonization initiatives and objectives, and to show educational and technological leadership on the existential threat of climate change.<\/p>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"expandable wp-block-heading\" role=\"button\">UC San Diego Senate Endorses Report of the Task Force on the Climate Crisis<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>On July 20, 2020, UC San Diego\u2019s Academic Senate voted to endorse a report from its task force on the climate crisis.
