The <a href=\"https:\/\/serc.berkeley.edu\/\">Student Environmental Resource Center (SERC)<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/tgif.berkeley.edu\/\">The Green Initiative Fund (TGIF)<\/a> at UC Berkeley cultivated resources for students to practice personal and community resilience related to environmental justice issues and initiatives. SERC created <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1VBI1y8wBqd3PQ0woB8CADJOJzaXGFvncTues-YVjU5w\/edit#heading=h.ckku5ututxk4\">Community Through COVID-19<\/a>, a living tool and community-building document, on March 10, the day that UC Berkeley canceled in-person courses. The document lists a variety of online events and resources that meet community needs, including links to mutual aid programs, study jams and an Understanding &amp; Resisting EcoFacism event put on by SERC staff.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amid the spring 2020 semester, <a href=\"https:\/\/tgif.berkeley.edu\/\">The Green Initiative Fund<\/a> committee voted to establish a COVID-19 $30,000 Emergency Fund to support active TGIF projects that have been affected by the coronavirus crisis. TGIF and SERC are driven and motivated by <a href=\"https:\/\/thekidshouldseethis.com\/post\/wangari-maathai-i-will-be-a-hummingbird#:~:text=The%20story%20of%20the%20hummingbird%20is%20about%20this%20huge%20forest,do%20something%20about%20the%20fire!\">Wangari Maathai\u2019s story of the hummingbird<\/a>, which emphasizes that small, individual acts can influence large-scale change. In three weeks, the committee designed and structured a (quick) application process and a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1Goe_SUX76Ov8HOVKw3ScyNqISMGEQELQFqUv3h-af84\/edit?usp=sharing\">rubric<\/a> for assessing projects, in order to expedite the distribution of funds for projects. TGIF received three emergency fund applications and were able to grant all three, totaling $14,771.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The three funded projects are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/tgif.berkeley.edu\/overview\/grant-cycles\/spring-2019\/reducing-uc-berkeleys-environmental-impact-through-stormwater-management\/\">Stormwater Detention and Biofiltration<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/tgif.berkeley.edu\/overview\/grant-cycles\/spring-2019\/environmental-education-for-students-of-color\/\">Environmental Education for Students of Color<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/tgif.berkeley.edu\/overview\/grant-cycles\/spring-2019\/decade-ii\/\">Berkeley Student Food Collective: Decade 2&nbsp;<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>TGIF has extended the emergency fund beyond spring and hopes to continue supporting projects impacted by COVID-19 into the school year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During spring 2020, many of UC Berkeley\u2019s operations and programs were put on hold due to COVID-19 and the subsequent shelter-in-place orders.
