progress through partnerships on the climate crisis, thanks to the unique structure between academic sustainability, which includes the Faculty Sustainability Chair and a Graduate Student Researcher, and operational sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UCR hosted the <a href=\"https:\/\/ucrotp.ucr.edu\/press\/2024\/02\/21\/ucr-leads-way-climate-action-and-innovation-first-ever-2024-inland-socal-oasistm\">Inland SoCal OASIS Climate Action Conference<\/a>, which addressed regional climate challenges and attracted multisector stakeholders. In leveling up with its peers, UC Riverside adopted the <a href=\"https:\/\/insideucr.ucr.edu\/stories\/2024\/05\/01\/ucr-joins-international-health-promotion-initiative\">Okanagan Charter<\/a>, which details plans to advance campus health, well-being, sustainability and equity. The campus also made a positive impact in the community and was recognized with the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ucr.edu\/articles\/2024\/01\/09\/designation-acknowledges-ucrs-community-engagement#:~:text=UC%20Riverside%20has%20received%20the,for%20the%20Advancement%20of%20Teaching.\">2024 Carnegie Elective Classification for Community Engagement<\/a> in addition to becoming the home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/iscclimatecollaborative.org\/\">Inland Southern California Climate Collaborative<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-style-read-more is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Read More about Sustainability at UC Riverside<\/summary>\n<p>To directly reduce campus energy consumption and move toward overall decarbonization goals, the campus funded carbon \u201cinset\u201d projects that prioritized energy efficiencies leading to decreased energy usage despite an increase in campus square footage. Regarding green buildings, the School of Medicine Education Building II includes a 200-kilowatt rooftop solar array and is anticipated to be the second LEED Platinum building on campus. The recently completed School of Business includes a 216-kilowatt rooftop solar array, along with the 150-kilowatt Glasgow and 100-kilowatt Bourns Engineering solar projects, which, with anticipated assistance from the Inflation Reduction Act, brings the campus\u2019s existing base total solar array to approximately 9 megawatts. Scope 1 emissions increased by more than 11% as a result of increased natural gas use while there was an almost 5% decrease in scope 2 emissions due to additional renewable energy sources at Riverside Public Utilities that improved the grid emissions factor. In 2024, the new Student Health and Counseling Center and the School of Medicine Building II were recognized with top awards and honored by Riverside\u2019s Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson for their architectural design, general maintenance and other qualities. UC Riverside was also designated as a bee-friendly campus due to improvement of the campus landscape for pollinators.
